A Candid Moment invites images capturing unposed, spontaneous, and authentic interactions. It focuses on real human emotions and everyday life unfolding naturally without the subject looking at or forcing a pose for the camera.

Black and White photography is a great way to create stronger elements in our frame by taking away the distraction of colour. With less things for our brain to process, it can grab our attention more. Use the opportunity to create more contrast and light/shadow play within your frame to tell a powerful story.

Venturing into these uncharted territories can level up our photo game and add a splash of creativity to our images, now and in the future. I’m sure there are tons of concepts that you may have been hesitant to try out and some that you haven’t even considered. Now is your chance.

These are photographs of natural subjects such as insects, butterflies and moths, birds, animals, or plants taken in their natural habitat. It does not include hybrid or cultivated plants, domestic or farmed animals. Other subjects which are acceptable include geological formations such as volcanic landforms or cloud formations. If possible, avoid including manmade features in the image. Images may be cropped, and the exposure corrected. Other changes to the image such as adding, changing, shifting, or removing elements is not permitted. Titles must either the scientific name or common name of the subject. We are using PSNZ Definitions.

This isn’t about what the machine is; it’s about the story you create with it. Who uses this machine? Where is it? What happened just before—or what’s about to happen next? Keep the machine visibly present and meaningful, not a prop in the background. Even if you go with a macro detailed shot of a chair, this also tells a story.

Inspired by an original Magnum Photographer
Being inspired isn’t the same as a 1:1 copy – far from it. It’s about learning and picking up certain aspects and nuances from a fellow photographer. Maybe it’s their tones and colour palette, or a particular technique that made a shot stick in your memory. Maybe it’s how they handle light, or their compositional style, or even just the way they see the world. The point is to study what makes their work click, and then apply that thinking to your own shot. Please name the photographer that inspired you in your title. Choose from Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, and David Seymour.

"Take your pick and create either a High Key or a Low Key image.
Low key photography is all about intentionally embracing shadows and using just a hint of light to carve out your subject. This is not the same as underexposing — in fact, the light you do include should be deliberate and well-exposed. It’s an amazing tool for adding mystery, drama, or mood to a scene.
High Key photography means creating a photo where most of the frame is bright.
This does not mean you need blown-out highlights, though. This also doesn’t mean you can’t have proper “black” in your photo. These are aesthetic choices to keep in mind."

Blur the Action
TA hybrid challenge involving technical as well as creative skills where we want photos that Blur The Action - or to put it another way, photos that tell a STRONGER story with motion blur. While most photos are shot with the intent of being as sharp as possible, photos with intentional blurring of motion give an added sense of movement to the viewer. This could be a dancer on stage, a car passing by, stars in the night sky or just about anything with some blur and a sense of motion.
